Striped frog fish
Scientific name: Antennarius striatus
Medium-large size frog fish, with a typical striped colour pattern on a background changing from yellow to pink, brown, reddish, green. The skin can grow also long skin filaments, giving a hairy appearence, like an algal tuft. Illicium as long as the second dorsal spine, large worm shaped esca. 22 cm.
Found in bay and lagoon, on sandy bottoms (especially the hairy form), but also along the external reef and deep reef, to a maximum depth of 219 m.
Possible confusion with Antennarius hispidus and Antennarius sp. Apart the stripes (more numerous in A. striatus, more sparse in A. hispidus, more similar to elongated oval spots in A. sp.), the obvious difference is the shape of the esca: worm like in A. striatus, pom-pom like in A. hispidus, shrimp like in A. sp.
