Lionfish (Pterois volitans)


The Lionfish (Pterois volitans) belongs to the family of fishes known as Scorpaenidae. The Lionfish is called many names around the world including Butterfly Cod, Devilfish, Volitans Lionfish, Turkey Fish and Fire Fish. The Lionfish is a tropical species that can be found throughout the tropical waters of the world including Northern Australia, Papua New Guinea, East Africa, the Red Sea and the Hawaiian Islands. It likes to live amongst the coral reefs and can often be seen on the edge of drop offs moving about amongst hard and soft corals. It becomes very active at night when it hunts the reef searching for prey. It feeds primarily on fishes and uses its large fin span to corner prey before striking with exceptional speed. They grow to a maximum size of approximately 40cm.
