Green Moray (Gymnothorax prasinus)

The Green Moray (Gymnothorax prasinus) is distributed around the southern coast of Australia, except between eastern Victoria and South Australia where it is found rarely. It can be commonly found from southern Queensland through all of New South Wales. It prefers to live on the coastal reefs but it is also seen in the inshore estuaries and deep water offshore reefs. This moray is a very inquisitive species and is known to come out of its cave to meet approaching divers. Some individuals actually enjoy divers scratching them up the chin whilst others wait for a diver to feed them, generally with a sea urchin. The colour of this species varies from a yellow/brown/orange to a bright green. It grows to a maximum size of approximately 1 metre.
